The Basics of Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler

Hey Denver! I have so many clients getting dermal filler and wanted to write this post to inform and hopefully address any questions about Hyaluronic Acid (HA) dermal filler. It is such an amazing product and can provide instant results.

What products are made from Hyaluronic Acid?
There are different types of filler but the most popular is made of hyaluronic acid. These are Juvéderm products: Juvéderm XC, VOLUMA, VOLBELLA, VOLLURE. Restylane products: Restylane, Restylane Silk, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Refyne, and Restylane Defyne. As well as Belotero Balance and Revanesse Versa.

What is Dermal Filler?
Dermal filler is made out of hyaluronic acid. This is a naturally occurring substance found in connective tissues including the skin. Original dermal filler was made of cow cartilage. Then the industry moved to using rooster combs. . Now filler is no longer made of animal products, it is synthetically made in a lab. It is made by the fermentation of a specific bacteria, the byproduct of this process is hyaluronic acid.

What Does Dermal filler do?
It naturally gives skin plumpness, resilience and turgor. It has a very high water content and can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. Therefore, it is a wonderful product that is used to improve mild to moderate wrinkles and lines, help improve scarring or create volume.

Where can it be injected?
Filler can be injected anywhere on the face, including lips, nose, mouth, cheeks and under wrinkles and lines.  Dermal filler can add volume and plumpness to these areas as well as help improve wrinkles. It can also be used to improve the appearance acne scars.

When should you get filler?
As we age we naturally lose volume, moisture and elasticity in our skin. You usually begin to see signs of volume loss in your 30's and beyond. That being said, I have many clients in their 20's who are getting lip filler for a fuller look.

How long does it last?
The amount of time filler lasts can vary depending on the person, type of product used and the location of the injection. With hyaluronic acid, lips can last anywhere from 4-6 months. This is because the lips move a lot during the day with eating and speaking. As you can imagine, the lips metabolize the product faster than other areas. Cheeks, the nose and other areas that are not as mobile as the lips, can last anywhere from 6-12 months.
That being said, occasionally there are people who metabolize things very quickly, this can shorten the length of time hyaluronic acid fillers last.

Is it painful?
Total honesty, it can be a little painful. Most products have lidocaine mixed into the product to help with pain. A topical numbing cream may be used as well as a "dental block." A dental block is a lidocaine injection that can provide a deeper/stronger numbing effect.

Who should inject filler?
Being injected with a filler is a wonderful way to temporarily diminish lines, wrinkles, create volume or plump the lips without getting surgery. Be aware that even though it is non-surgical, it is still a medical procedure that requires specific training, liscensure, experience, and skills. Make sure you are being injected by, at minimum, a registered nurse to help ensure the treatment is provided safely and effectively. Never jeopardize safety for savings.
